discard は”不要になったものを処分する”英単語で
throw away（捨てる） のちょっと堅い言い方ですね。
語源は ”離す（dis)””カード（card）”。
カードゲームなどで ”いらない札を場に捨てる”ところから来ていて、
【（トランプで）不要な札を捨てる】や【 [名] 捨て札】という、そのままの意味も。

Discard things you don't need.
「必要ないものは捨てなさい。」

Don't you discard this old coat yet?
「この古いコート、まだ捨てないの？」

物以外に ”習慣や意見、不要な人”などを
”廃止する，放棄する，切り捨てる”といった感じでも使われます。
We decided to discard the long-held custom.
「私達は長年の慣習を廃止することにした。」

The plans were discarded.
「その計画は放棄された。」
